CHANDIGARH: Movement within Panjab University could soon turn into a nightmare for outsiders. A special committee constituted by the vice-chancellor to look into traffic chaos on campus has come up with recommendations that include creating a paid parking lot for visitors, not allowing outsiders to take their vehicles beyond gate no. 1 and asking them to park in a separate space there.
For those unwilling to toe the line, the panel has suggested purchasing or hiring a crane to get these vehicles out of the way.
"The committee's recommendations were recently submitted to the VC," said Manjeet Singh, the panel's chairperson and president of Panjab University Teachers' Association (PUTA).
However, the proposed changes in PU's vehicle rules has invited sharp criticism.
"Stopping visitors from taking their vehicles inside PU will cause them a lot of inconvenience," said former president of Panjab University Campus Students' Council, Amit Bhatia.
With PU having over 178 affiliated colleges in Chandigarh and Punjab, hundreds of students and parents visit the administrative block on a daily basis for getting official work done. "Asking them to leave their cars and scooters at the gate will mean they'll have to walk all the way to the offices. This is plain harassment," Bhatia added. The committee has also recommended that hostel residents be discouraged from using vehicles. It has been proposed that university prospectus explicitly mention that those residing in hostels will not to be allowed to use vehicles.
