Pancha Bhasha musician Shrinivas Khale passes away at 85

Marathi music director Shrinivas Khale, who was fondly called as 'Khale Kaka', passed away at his residence 'Vasant Vihar' in Thane at 1.10 am today following brief illness. The 85-year-old composer was not keeping well from the last few days. He is survived by his wife Surekha Khale, 3 daughters - Shama, Sanjivani and Sonali. His funeral will take place later in the day.

Shrinivas Khale's family were not keen on his inclination towards music during his younger days. But his brother Kashinath Khale, who knew playing flute, bulbul tarang and harmonium, gave him the path of his life. With his hard work, he became one of the most respected artistes in the Marathi music industry for over six decades.

Shrinivas Khale has composed numerous songs in five languages like Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Sanskrit and mainly Marathi. He has worked with veterans like Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosale, Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, Vasantrao Deshpande, Pandit Ulhas Kashalkar, Dr. Balamurli Krishnan, Talat Mehmood, Hridaynath Mangeshkar, Manna Dey, Bhupender Singh, Mahendra Kapoor, Suresh Wadkar, Arun Date.

The Pancha Bhasha musician has recorded 141 'Bhavgeets' and music for 6 Marathi films like Yanda Kartavya Ahe, Bolki Bhauli, Palsala Pane Teen, Jivhala, Porki and Sobati. 'Bheti lagi Jeeva', 'Ya chimnyano', 'Bhaglyanchi maal phule', 'Gori Gori pan phula sarkhi chaan' are some of his most famous compositions.

Shrinivas Khale has also scored music for theatrical plays like 'Paanigrahan', 'Vidushak' and 'Devache paay' during his stint in Akashwani, Mumbai. He was recently conferred with the prestigious Padma Bhushan award by the Central Government. With his sudden demise, India has lost a versatile music composer.
