Last month Google announced new partnerships with Intel, Sony, and Logitech to create Google TV: an Android-based solution to a set-top box and TV media integration. Although it has Sony on-board for a TV solution, it looks like other manufacturers will be steering clear of Google’s OS.
Panasonic is the second TV manufacturer to come out against Google TV. It doesn’t have a problem with the concept, it’s the cost that seems to be the stumbling block for integrating it with a TV. Samsung has made the same decision, but because it is developing its own solution.
Robert Perry, senior vice president of Panasonic Consumer Electronics Co., took questions after a 3D TV presentation in San Francisco. There he discussed talking with Google about its solution, but came to the conclusion it was just too expensive. Although the Android OS is free, the need to use Intel components seems to be where the excessive cost comes from.
Although a blow to the deployment of Google TV, the focus to begin with is on set-top boxes meaning consumers can pair Google TV with any display.
