Panasonic's eight new compact point-and-shoot cameras might feel as fast as D-SLR cameras—all will snap shots with less than 1 second of shutter lag.
Today Panasonic announced six new compact point and shoot cameras—all of which will be powered by a fast image processor known as Venus Engine VI. With this generation of processor (also found in some of their line of 2010 cameras), the cameras will be able to significantly cut down on shutter lag (time between pressing the shutter release and when the image is captured) so they may feel as fast as a D-SLR which offers no shutter lag. Panasonic claims the new cameras will offer as little as .008 seconds of lag and faster.
The touchscreen models will be the Panasonic Lumix FP7 and FP5. The FP7 will offer a 3.5-inch LCD and 16-megapixel captures while the FP5 will step down to a 3-inch LCD and 14.1-megaxpixel captures. Both cameras will offer 4x optical zoom and HD video capture at 720p.
The Panasonic Lumix FH27 and FH25 will be the thin 8x optical zoom models—they're just .72 inches thick. Both will offer 16.1-megapixel captures and high-definition 720p video capture. The FH27 will offer a 3-inch LCD while the FH25 will use a 2.7-inch LCD.

Other .72-inch thick models will be available with half the optical zoom (4x.) The Panasonic Lumix FH5 and FH2 will do 16.1-megapixel and 14.1=megapixel captures (respectively), capture 720p video and offer 2.7-inch LCDs.
The budget models will be the Panasonic Lumix S3 and S1. They will have similar specifications to the FH27 and FH25 but are slightly thicker.
