Opera has updated their Opera Mini mobile web browser today, with a focus on improving the browsing experience on lower-end mobile phones.

Opera Mini is one of the leading mobile phone web browsers for lower-end devices, and makes use of compression technology which reduces file sizes by up to 90 per cent, cutting data costs which at times can be exorbitant. According to Opera CEO Lars Boilesen, more than 61 million people on over 3000 different devices now use Mini for browsing on their mobile phone.

While this latest update may seem rather lackluster when compared to the much bigger 5.0 update which arrived earlier this year, Opera Mini 5.1 makes a number of improvements including an increased browsing speed on phones with limited memory, faster scrolling of web pages, and an overall improvement in browsing performance. There's also a new skin for the browser, which allows more pages to be open at the same time than before.

Opera says the update is "highly recommended" for those with devices that have especially limited memory, including the Nokia S40 feature phones such as the Nokia 5130 XpressMusic, Nokia 6300 and Nokia 2700 handsets, or a small screen size, like the Sony Ericsson K550i and Sony Ericsson W810i.
