Jalandhar June 24:

The B.Pharmacy course being offered by the Punjab Technical University has got a severe beating this year. There are 33 colleges offering the course in the state and if the average is calculated, all institutes would get three students each. There are only 110 candidates for the 2,030 seats, almost a 1:20 ratio.

And despite the fact that a very low number of candidates were expected, the university has gone ahead with online counselling. Last time as well, there were 250 candidates but the number has come down to half this year. Two years ago, the situation was much different when the number of candidates who had applied was almost 10 times more than this year: 1,040 applications for 1,247 seats.

Ever since, the number of seats has almost doubled while the number of candidates has gone down almost 10 times. About the diminishing interest of students in the course, PTU Vice Chancellor Dr Rajneesh Arora said it was perhaps because of a long lasting impact of the slowdown in the market. “It may be because the companies have not been able to offer good packages to the freshers,” he said.

Even in B.Architecture, there are only 130 candidates against a total of 350 seats in six colleges under the PTU. Similarly, there are only 14,500 applicants for the 34,500 B.Tech seats in nearly 100 engineering colleges in the state. But, the university is expecting almost 4,000 more candidates in the second and third counselling in this course.

Even the number of candidates applying under fee waiver scheme is quite low. While the candidates with annual family income of less than Rs 2.5 lakh can avail tuition fee waiver under the state government scheme, only 630 candidates have applied for a total of as many as 1,750 available seats.

Taking a Different Course: The Punjab Technical University says that the impact of the slowdown on pharma sector has to be blamed, as a result of which B.Pharma students are not getting good job offers
