Many years ago, Sukhjeet Singh and Miththu Singh were in school together. Then Sukhjeet moved to London, and Miththu to Dubai.
But they remained good friends. Even last month they holidayed together in India, taking selfies on the dunes of Jodhpur. But on Friday night, Miththu quietly entered Sukhjeet's village home in UP's Shahjahanpur, and slit his throat, police said. It was Sukhjeet's wife, Ramandeep, who opened the door for Miththu.

The sordid tale spanning Derbyshire, Dubai, Kapurthala and Shahjahanpur ended on Saturday with the arrest of Miththu at IGI airport just as he was about to board. What Sukhjeet did not know was that his best friend and wife had fallen in love, a romance that probably began when he and Ramandeep visited Miththu in Dubai two years back.
Police were able to solve the murder in the nick of time thanks to the Jodhpur selfie on Sukhjeet's smartphone that shows him posing for the camera along with his wife of 11 years, who is a British citizen, their two kids aged nine and six, and Miththu. It is this frame that unravelled the crime of passion that has left three families shattered.

Police discovered the photograph as they surfed Sukhjeet's phone that was found next to his blood-stained body — his throat slit — in his hometown Shahjahanpur on Friday night. The 35-year-old NRI, a native of Basantapur village, had moved to the UK more than a decade ago to work as a transporter in Derbyshire. One day he met Ramandeep Kaur, a British citizen who her friends said was the smartest and prettiest among them, and fell in love. They married in 2005.
According to police, Miththu and Ramandeep stayed in touch after the Dubai trip. Ramandeep planned a visit to her uncle's place in Jalandhar the following year where Miththu was already waiting. During that trip, her relatives took note of her growing fondness for Miththu and even cautioned her against it. "But she had perhaps decided there was no looking back for her," said Pyaara Singh, Sukhjeet's uncle who is a DSP with Punjab Police and whose efforts led to the murder mystery being solved quickly.
