Now, you have to pay 30-40% more for travelling Rajdhani, Duranto and Shatabdi. The Railway Ministry announced that except the first class AC and executive chair car, people will need to pay extra for buying a ticket for other compartments of these trains. This move was decided after Railways revised catering charges in these trains.

In the revised fare scheme, there will be a 10% increase in the base fare for the first 10% of the berth. At this rate, the base fare will be more than 50% for the last 50% of the compartment. The ceiling is set at 1.5 times of the base fare. Only the third class AC will have a ceiling of 1.4 times. At this rate, you have to pay 43% more for booking Rajdhani and Duranto. Shatabdi has kept the slab between 32-33%. This rate is also valid for those who are booking under the Tatkal quota.

There is also a revision of food tariffs with newer menus being introduced for both the vegetarians and the non-vegetarians. Dishes like fish fry, kulcha channa, stuffed paratha etc will be included in the menu chart. You now need to pay more for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, which is about 50-60% more than the pre-existing one.

Additional charges include service tax, superfast charges, and reservation charges.

The Indian Railway is hopeful that this move will revive the empty treasury of the Indian Railways. Since most people will opt out for airlines, they have consciously decided to leave out AC first class and the executive chair class out of the list. Tickets which are still left to be booked will be sold at the price other tickets of that class have been sold with additional supplementary charges.
