FEROZEPUR: There's a good news for government teachers of three districts — they don't need to cook food under the mid-day meal scheme any more as the state has decided to hire non-government organizations to arrange food for the kids.

According to information, on trial basis, the government has given the contract of supplying cooked food in all primary and middle schools in Ferozepur, Tarn Taran and Nawanshahr to NGO and if it works, the scheme would extended to the remaining districts of the state. In Ferozepur, the contract has been given to Naari Shakti, a Delhi-based NGO.

The mid-day meal scheme was launched by the Union government to boost universalization of primary education, besides enhancing nutrition of students of primary and middle level. As teachers were entrusted with the job of cooking food, they were facing a lot of problems. A section of teachers were lamenting that additional charge of managing funds and distribution of cooked food robbed them of their efficiency to certain degree besides disrupting the academic schedule.

The mid-day meal scheme under the new setup under which cooked food is being provided to the 1.80 lakh students in
the district by the NGO has started functioning from Monday. According to information, for 2,200 primary and middle schools in the district, the NGO has established three kitchens at Abohar, Guruhar Sahai and Zira form where cooked food to be dispatched to all nearby schools.

Welcoming the decision, district education officer (primary) Sohan Lal said the new scheme would ensure not only nutritious meal to the students, but would also helpful teachers, who can now concentrate on teaching. Satinder Singh, an activist of Sikhiya Sudhar Committee, suggested that cooking of meals should be monitored by the health department to ensure effective implementation of the scheme.
