Chandigarh October 1:

Punjab Congress President Amarinder Singh said there was nothing unusual in Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal backing out of his proposal to bring a resolution in the state Assembly seeking clemency for death row convict Devinder Pal Singh Bhullar.

"Badal has always played politics on each and every issue for his own advantage," Singh said while referring to yesterday's announcement by Badal that he had decided not to bring any resolution in the Assembly. "Had he really been sincere and serious, he would have convinced his alliance partner to support his resolution before deciding to bring it in the Assembly," he said, adding that the chief minister must explain as to how he went public on the issue without taking his alliance partner into confidence.

Singh said, "It was the same Badal whose government had earlier submitted an affidavit in the Supreme Court describing Bhullar as a terrorist and threat to peace in Punjab only to defend IPS officer Sumedh Singh Saini," Singh said. Bhullar is a death row convict in the 1993 Delhi blast.
