New Delhi July 7:

In view of the Telangana statehood demand once again gaining steam after legislators from the state resigned en masse, Home Minister P Chidambaram, dismissed suggestions that the Centre is mulling imposition of President’s Rule in the state.

“We are not thinking of President’s Rule. We are happy that some many MLAs and MPs have resigned. Already the general secretary-incharge of the Congress party is engaging them,” Chidambaram said while presenting his ministry’s monthly report card. “The process of consultations will show us the path,” he added. The total number of legislators from the region quitting the Andhra Pradesh Assembly over the issue has so far touched the 100 mark.

Importantly, he also announced that no decision has been taken on convening all-party meeting on the Telangana issue. On the concerns about a breakdown in law and order in the state, especially in view of the 48-hour bandh being imposed by the Telangana Joint Action Committee, the Home Minister said, “There is an apprehension that a law and order situation may arise due to the bandh. I sincerely hope that there won’t be any breakdown of law and order.”

The JAC called for the bandh to impress upon the Centre the immediate need to carve out a separate state of Telangana, which will be followed by a rail roko on July 8 and 9. Schools, colleges, shops, petrol pumps and other commercial establishments remained closed and public transport services were badly hit in all the Telangana districts, including Hyderabad, due to the bandh.

The Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) suspended its services at various places as a precautionary measure and commuters had a tough time in reaching their destinations. The government offices are functioning with only skeleton staffs reporting to duty as the employees and other sections are also part of the JAC. The students of Osmania University clashed with the security personnel yesterday when they were prevented from taking out a rally. The students are planning to organise a rally.
