Controversial Nihang leader Ajit Singh Poohla, known for his terror in his heydays and later as a police informer, on Friday succumbed to burn injuries received in jail the day before.

Known to flaunt his connections with politicians and bureaucrats, Poohla first came into limelight in 1985, when he was attacked by Khalistan Liberation Force (KLF) extremists Amrik Singh Jauran and Avtar Singh Brahmpura, along with their 12-odd men, at his dera near Poohla village under police station, Khalra.

His confrontation with the terrorists brought him close to the police officials. His son, who was recruited in the police, was dismissed in an excise and taxation case.

"His information led the arrests of several militants," said the then SHO of Khalra police station, SS Brar, who is now posted with the Punjab police as an SP. Punjab police officers, who served in Tarn Taran, Batala and Amritsar during the days of terror remember him as a man who helped them counter terrorism with his exact information.
