Audi recently launched a cheaper variant of the Q3 SUV, badged the Q3 S, on August 19, while the bigger Q5 received a facelift in January this year. The Q7, however, hasn’t received any major updates for a while now, and a refreshed version isn’t likely until late next year due to a late change in its design.

The proposed design for the updated Q7 was deemed too aggressive when Wolfgang Egger took charge in 2011, and the subsequent redesign has led to the delay. Another reason why it has been delayed is because of the platform on which the Q7 will be based on. Derived from the car-based MLB architecture, it will spawn both the 2015 Q7 and a Bentley SUV due in 2016.

The new platform will help Audi trim close to 300kg from the Q7’s kerb weight. The weight savings will come from the use of aluminum and even some composite materials in the vehicle’s construction as well as the use of smaller engines.

In terms of engines, the new Q7 is expected to use the same engines as seen in the new A8 and A6 saloons. A plug-in hybrid is also expected.

The new Audi Q7 will make its debut late next year and will go on sale in 2015.
