Dubai: Nashwan Nasir, who was the UAE's star performer in Under-15 cricket and in inter-school matches in 2005, has returned stronger from England and produced a deadly five-wicket spell against the formidable Yogi Group team to ensure an exciting 11-run win for Nucaf Tellicherry in a Dubai Cricket Council Premier League match.

Nasir had left the UAE for higher studies in London after his exploits as a young boy. "I am delighted to be back and produce a match-winning performance. Despite joining Brunel University I never gave up playing. I played for Farnham Royals Cricket Club and kept improving my skills and this five-wicket spell is an incredible experience in the context of the match," remarked 21-year-old Nasir to Gulf News.

Nasir hails from a cricketing family. His father, C.T.K. Nasir, is the creator of the Tellicherry team and his uncles, C.T.K. Mashood and Usman Kutty, have played in the Ranji Trophy in India.

Diving catch

Last week Nasir, playing under the captaincy of Mashood, took a diving catch at long-off to scoop the catch of UAE player Nazir Aziz to help Tellicherry win the Piri Piri Cup tournament, beating Wings XI.

"Till the 13th over, the match was evenly balanced as Wings were scoring at a run rate of 10 runs per over and this catch made the difference. It helped us record our first tournament win of the season and a morale-booster before our Mobil Cup final," said Mashood.

Seven Seas Strikers beat Al Manal Cricket Club by three wickets to qualify for the Mobil Cup final.

Another of Nasir's uncles, Kutty, emerged man of the match in Sharjah's Junior Twenty20 tournament.

Kutty hit a breezy 44 off just 18 balls to steer Commercial Bank International to an eight-wicket win over Zahira Colombo.

Meanwhile, the Al Dhaid Gold Cup 40-over match between Afridi Cricket Club and Emirates Islamic Bank ended in a thrilling tie.

Naeem Khan of Emirates Islamic Bank was the hero with a fighting 61 runs and a three-wicket spell.

In another match, Nazir Aziz missed his century by 14 runs but ensured a 219-run win over Sharjah Club.
