The Detroit NAACP is giving an award to Kid Rock for his advocacy of the city, drawing some criticism because the Grammy-nominated artist has used the Confederate flag during stage performances.

The local chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People stands by the decision and says Kid Rock is not a racist. The group is giving the Michigan native its Great Expectations Award today.

To many, the flag is a symbol of racism and oppression of blacks in the South.

Kid Rock has said he'll save his comments for the dinner.
