Overcast conditions prevailed in various parts of Punjab, Haryana and their joint capital Chandigarh on Thursday even as Monsoon is likely to hit the region on July 1.
The Met Department forecast light to moderate rainfall during the next 24 hours in the region. Met officials have also forecast partly cloudy sky with possibility of thunderstorms and dust storms in the region.
The Met official said, “Partly cloudy conditions are prevailing in various parts of Punjab and Haryana on Thursday. There is a possibility of light to moderate rains at few places in Haryana and Punjab in the next 24 hours. Thunder squalls with wind speed excedding 45 kmph is also likely to occur at isolated places in both neighboring states in next 48 hours.”
The southwest monsoon is also likely to hit Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh by July 1, said the Met officials. The Met official said that there is a possibility that the monsoon will advance into Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh by July 1. Meanwhile, Chandigarh on Thursday recorded a maximum temperature of 34.8 degrees Celsius, which was two notches below normal, and a minimum temperature of 30.4 degrees Celsius, normal for this time of the year.
The Met official said, “There was moderate rainfall at few places in the region on Wednesday night that brought some respite from the heat. We are expecting similar conditions to prevail in this region for the next couple of days.” “In Haryana, Hisar recorded highest maximum temperature of 40 degree Celsius while Amritsar in Punjab recorded the highest maximum temperature of 39.3 degree Celsius in the State,” said Met official.
In Haryana, Karnal recorded 12.4 mm rainfall till Thursday morning. The district settled at the maximum temperature of 36.8 while Ambala recorded maximum temperature of 37.9 degree Celsius. Ludhiana and Patiala recorded respective maximum temperatures of 36.5, two notches below normal and 38 degree celsius. Dharmsala and Mandi in Himachal received 10.2 mm and 23.7 mm of rainfall till Thursday morning. The state capital- Shimla recorded maximum temperature of 24 degree Celsius and minimum temperature settled at 17.5 degree Celsius. The district received 4.6 mm rainfall.
