Chandigarh July 7:

Harish Rai Dhanda, Shiromani Akali Dal MLA from Ludhiana (West) and Chief Parliamentary Secretary (Local Bodies), would be the next chairman of the Punjab Public Service Commission, a position that fell vacant after the death of former chairman SK Sinha last month.

Dhanda, as per sources, is expected to submit his resignation as an MLA anytime now. His file, after being cleared by Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, has been forwarded to Governor Shivraj Patil. After getting elected as an MLA, Dhanda was made in-charge of the Vidhan Sabha Committee that probed the role of former Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh in the Amritsar Improvement Trust scam.

The committee had recommended the expulsion of Amarinder from the Vidhan Sabha, but the decision was overruled by the Supreme Court. An alumnus of Government College, Ludhiana, and the Department of Laws, Panjab University, Dhanda was lawyer in Ludhiana before he took to politics. He had unsuccessfully contested the Vidhan Sabha elections before he got an Akali ticket in the 2007 election.

Meanwhile, the resignation by Dhanda from the Ludhiana (West) seat would open the doors for former minister Maheshinder Singh Grewal, who had joined the Gurcharan Singh Tohra faction during the SAD split, but is now considered close to SAD president Sukhbir Badal. Also, the move to appoint Dhanda as PPSC chairperson has not gone down well with the Congress, as its state chief Amarinder Singh has described the move as “politicisation of the PPSC”.

Amarinder has described Dhanda as an “Akali agent who will always toe the line of the SAD leadership”. “Dhanda’s credentials are doubtful as he is known for subverting law, as he had done while recommending my expulsion from the assembly, which was later set aside by the Supreme Court with serious strictures against the government,” he said.
