Milan Italy Travel Guide

In contrast to the somewhat laid-back reputation of southern Italy, the Milanese take pride in working – and playing – hard. The Milan city has sprawled outwards and the centre is now dedicated to offices, quality shops, restaurants and bars. Milan Italy is a rail hub, with five stations. It’s easy to get around, with a Metro and an extensive tram network.

Amidst the frenetic energy of Milan, there are a few quiet places and many sights worth seeing. The Sempione Park is one of the city’s few green spaces. The astonishing wedding-cake Duomo Cathedral in its fabulous square is the second-largest church in Italy, after St Peter’s in Rome. It was begun in the late 14th century, occupying the site of thecentral Roman forum, and eventually completed in the 19th. It has literally thousands of marble statues. The grand 18th century La Scala is the home of opera in Italy. The 15th century Sforza Castle is now an art gallery that has Michelangelo’s last sculpture. The St Ambrose Basilica is one of Italy’s most ancient churches (built 379-386, with later bell towers).

These are merely the tip of a monumental iceberg, but this is a city that moves with the times – or even tries to get ahead. Just in case, bring the Map of Milan for your street guidance. A number of old industrial zones are being redeveloped with typical Milanese flair, ensuring that this go-ahead city retains its rightful place at the forefront of Italian life.
