Famed hacker George “geohot” Hotz certainly has a lot on his plate these days, as he attempts to face down Sony in court over the release of the PlayStation 3’s developer key, which allows any current PS3 model to run code and think it is from Sony itself. It was a big hack, and while geohot didn’t invent that explot, he did popularize it… and unlike previous jailbreaks, it’s not something Sony can fix without issuing new hardware.
Sony, of course, would like nothing more than to sue geohot into oblivion, but Sony’s arch-enemies over at Microsoft definitely don’t share that perspective. In fact, they love geohot for crippling their biggest competitor… or, at the very least, want geohot to think they love him so he doesn’t have mind to hack their devices himself.
Why do we say that? Microsoft has just reached out to the famous hacker by offering him a free Windows Phone 7 handset in response to geohot’s blog post declaring that he intended to buy one for hacking purposes.
Microsoft’s Brandon Watson replied on Twitter:
“#geohot if you want to build cool stuff on #wp7, send me email and the team will give you a phone – let dev creativity flourish #wp7dev”.
It seems like Microsoft may be trying to keep geohot on their good side, but personally, I suspect this is going to backfire: all Microsoft will end up having done is provide geohot the very handset he uses to compromise their DRM.

geohot is an independent genius....he might as well take the phone, but it won't cause him to become friends with MS
