So many other religions do that and quite effectively, we all know about Jesus' life story & even kids in Japan knows about the story of Ram ( an animation they made got quite popular )

So why don't we Sikhs use media to promote our religion,

Such a thing would not be possible without recreating the lives of the Guru's onscreen.
Then there is the problem that the Akal Takht would want to be the censor board of
any such attempt if ever undertaken. They didn't allow the publication of the Tamil
translation of the Guru Granth the reason being that the entire voculabury of the Guru's
verses should not sound unlike Punjabi. They wanted the Tamils to have the verses
written in Tamil script but read/sung using the same vocabulary. Now why would a
Tamil even if he is a Sikh would want to pray to his God in Punjabi?? Tamil Hindu's
don't pray in Sanskrit and recite even the Gayatri Mantra in Tamil.

But later they said the translation was not authentic so.... without telling us when
Vedanti or Makkadd became linguist scholars and that too of Tamil...

Besides the Christians and the Hindu's don't really have a problem with actors depicting
the role of God or Guru or Sant. The Sikh would see it as an affront to their Guru's.
If not the Sikh masses the keepers of Sikh institutions sure will. They will fear a Tv serial
on the life of the Guru's could possibly eliminate their role as sole preachers and keepers
of Faith.

B R Chopras Mahabharat ensured not just empty cinema halls but empty Mandirs too.
Every Sunday morning.
But Hindus have have come a long way. From street dramas/satsangs, to tellywood.

Thanks

We know Sikhs have a problem with actors ( even voice actors ) impersonating Gurus but is there any history behind this or just a self imposed restriction ?

Neither History nor self-imposed restriction but a fear they would be absorbed by
what many call the Boa Metaphysica.

When the fear rose, under what socio-political(religion is certainly not the reason) climate
is not really easy to pinpoint. Can we pinpoint the exact time when Hindu's started resigning
their women under a ghungat and inside their homes ? What they feared we know.

Ghungat arrived with 'Hindustan'. Virginity as purity of the soul arrived with 'India'.
No woman in 'Bharat' ever went behind a ghungat.

Thanks

Well Media promotion is not just limited to Tv shows or movies I guess, there can be many things which can be used to do any promotions.
Sikh religion does have some rules and regulations which may create issues to promote the sikhism through different media mediums. There are many good comic books and story books for children as well as adults which teach them about the sikhism and the great history of Sikh gurus. You can take example of Probity Comics, they just started their own publication of Sikh comics and has launched 3 comics books (in english language) till now, you can know more about them on their website Sikh Gurus Stories For children, Personalised Comics Books Gurus For Kids, Except them there are many other enterprenuers which are in the feild of creating sikh history books and other related comic books.

If we talk about the films then yes we may have some difficult issues but there are some really good films based on sikh culture, sikhism and sikh gurus like Rise of the Khalsa, Dhan Dhan Baba Deep Singh Ji, The Sahebzaday. so we can say that we are improving but on a very slow rate.
