</td></tr> <tr> <td height="604"> On 16th June Sikhs worldwide will commemorate the martyrdom of Guru Arjan Dev Ji, the first SikhGuru to be born in a Sikh family and the first martyr of the Sikhs.
Having accomplished the primary mission of His holy life of compiling Sri Guru Granth Sahib and its momentous installation in Sri Harimandir Sahib, Sri Guru Arjan Dev, Nanak the Fifth was Himself the first to enter into the arena of this Cosmic Sacrifice. Sikh history until then had been peaceful and non-violent. He compiled all the former Gurus teachings into one holy book - the Adi Granth, comprising of the message of compassion, love, dedication, hard work, worship of one God and the commitment to peace and harmony for all the people of the world. Guru Arjan Dev Ji was imprisoned and martyred in 1606 because Emperor Jehangir suspected him of supporting his opponents after the death of Emperor Akbar. Emperor Jehangir imprisoned Guru Arjan Dev Ji and later handed him over to Murtaza Khan (an official of Jehangir) to torture Guru Arjan Dev Ji to death. Guru Sahib was made to sit on a scorching iron plate and had boiling sand poured over his body. Guru Arjan Dev Ji tolerated this pain and sat there chanting hymns -
Your actions seem so sweet to me.
Nanak begs for the treasure of the Naam, the Name of the Lord. The martyrdom of Guru Sahib changed the entire character of Sikhism radically from passive people to courageous saint soldiers who would neither fear nor dread anyone.
One who does not frighten anyone, and who is not afraid of anyone else -
says Nanak, listen, mind: call him spiritually wise.
At the spot where the Guru ji's body was thrown into the river was later erected a Gurdwara, called “Dehra Sahib”. Before 'Partition' a big fair called Jor Mela, was annually held there to celebrate the Guru's martyrdom.
Guru sahib incarnated out of love for us and burnt himself on the burning hot plate out of love for the burning world. He gave Himself away and wholly to us, yearning for a world namely that where it be followed, 'enmity with none and friendship for all'.
