Manjeet Singh NRI, Appointed Britain’s new British Consulate-General to China he has officially taken office in January 2011.
While this is his first Ambassadorial appointment he has held a succession of other senior appointments with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, some with a strong China focus.
Manjeet Singh, live in London at the beginning of the 90s, before serving in the Joint Liaison Group in the run-up to the handover of Hong Kong. His other China-related work also included a posting in Washington following US foreign policy in Asia and latterly he was the FCO’s Asia-Pacific Director before secondment to Carlton Communication
Mr. Manjeet Singh’s family has always been the starting point of everything he has wanted to achieve in Media law and politics. He is proud of the values that were instilled in him when he was young.
Today, as a father, he knows how important quality family time is, and has made shared parental leave a priority.
He then set up Media to publish Company, which has redefined magazine journalism in the country. The Ethnic Media group which has grown out of the magazine, is one of the largest media conglomerates in NRI from a number of publications, the group also controls Independent Web News Business TV Today, which owns the popular news channel in December 2000. TV Today, whose CEO is is a listed company whose shares are traded on the London Stock Exchange and National Stock Exchange. Other than News Web they also run three other channels - ‘Headlines Today’ an English language news channel, which has not been able to dent the lead of channels .A Business news channel in collaboration with Bloomberg is also expected shortly.
Mr. Manjeet Singh was educated at Eton College before studying LLB Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Oxford, gaining a first class honors’ degree.
Before becoming a Barrester, Mr. Manjeet Singh worked in business and government. He worked as a Special Media Adviser first to the Chancellor of the Exchequer and then to the Home Secretary.
Afterwards he spent seven years at UK media company, Carlton Communications, and served on the management Board. His Found Ethnic Media Group and Publishers of news Magazine and Running TV Channel .He today spoke of his pride at being appointed to Beijing and his keenness to further build UK-China links.
He said: “I feel proud, because this job is now central to UK interests. The re-emergence of China as a major global player is perhaps the greatest single geopolitical event of our times. To work in China today is to participate in history in the making. This brings real responsibility and opportunity for all of us. Mr Singh speaks Chinese, German, Dutch, French, Spanish and some Arabic. Her hobbies include Chinese calligraphy, reading, traveling and cooking. The queen bestowed the honor of Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) on Elliot in the 2010 New Year’s Honors List.Manjeet Singh edited No Fiction – Books from around the World, and Imagining Tomorrow - Rethinking the Global Challenge, featuring articles by prominent thinkers on challenges faced by the international community in the era of globalization. His interests are in Socialism and mystical traditions, literature, cosmology, football, Country ,Western classical music, and jazz.
The UK’s Foreign Minister, David Miliband stated, “I welcome the appointment of Mr Singh as the new British Consulate-General to China I look forward to working with him on the challenges we face as a country.
