Daduwal September 10:
In a shameless act which may have no parallel, a man thrashed his 17-year-old daughter to death in an inebriated state after allegedly raping her and then hurriedly cremated her despite being asked by villagers, including the panchayat, to wait for the police. Interestingly, his wife was asked not to add the rape charge in the FIR.
Accused Salinderpal, who lives in Dalit colony of Daduwal village and has seven children, used to squander the hard earned money of his wife and four children on liquor, forcing them to live in penury. According to villagers, consuming liquor and then beating up his wife and children had become his "daily ritual" and he repeated this on Monday night also.
But no one knew that it would culminate in the painful death of the innocent girl, Gurpreet. "Daddy was beating up mother and Gurpreet tried to intervene. But then daddy pounced upon her and started thrashing her," said Amandeep, second daughter of the accused, who had a narrow escape from the clutches of Salinderpal a couple of years back after he tried to hang her by a fan in the house.
"She was saved by the neighbours and panchayat members. But to escape police action, he apologized to his wife and children," said Manjit Kaur, a neighbour of the family. "We heard the screams of his wife, Shakuntla and some neighbours tried to calm him. But in the morning we came to know that he had killed Gurpreet," said Kaur. Shakuntla told the police that the girl was thrashed, strangulated and then dashed against a wall, leading to her death.
"We were told that the girl had died of heart attack. But when we were bathing the body, we found some injury marks and to our utter shock there were signs that indicated she had been raped," said Jaswinder Kaur and Veena of the same village. As the news spread, panchayat members led by sarpanch Makhan Singh came to the colony and asked Salinderpal not to cremate the body.
But as soon as they left, he asked his children and wife to take the body to the cremation ground and then hurriedly consigned her to flames on Tuesday before the police could reach. He has been arrested and a case registered.
