Mumbai: In what could be another case of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) party taking the law into its hands, Member of Legislative Assembly Mangesh Sangle was yesterday arrested for allegedly assaulting a station manager at the Vikhroli railway station in north-east Mumbai.

A day after party activists damaged auto-rickshaws and assaulted several drivers the city, Sangle was accused by the railway police of leading a group that beat up I.A. Khan, on Monday night.

Violent altercation

The assault on Khan was sparked by a violent altercation between a group of passengers waiting to purchase tickets and a booking clerk at 7.35pm.

Upset with the clerk's delay in issuing tickets, the agitated passengers smashed the booking office windows, prompting the clerk to complain to the station manager.

Alerted by the passengers, Sangle arrived at the Vikhorli station along with his supporters half an hour later. He and his supporters allegedly assaulted Khan.

Sangle, whom the police arrested at noon yesterday, was charged under sections of the Indian Penal Code with assaulting a public servant while on duty.

He was produced before a Bhoiwada court in the afternoon. The court released him on bail against a cash surety.

Search on for associates

Meanwhile, the police are looking for Sangle's associates, also suspected of being involved in the assault on Khan.

MNS activists taking the law into their hands is becoming an increasingly regular occurrence in Mumbai, where the Raj Thackeray-led party on Wednesday smashed up to 10 auto-rickshaws and beat up their drivers as part of protests against the "high-handed" approach of drivers towards their customers.

All the auto-rickshaw drivers attacked by MNS workers were north-Indian migrants settled in the city.
