The kitchen is often one of the busiest and most dangerous place in the home. Especially the young children are at a great risk. 65% of all residential fire calls are related to the kitchen. More injuries occur in the kitchen than any other room in your home.

Probably the two most dangerous characteristics of a kitchen are:

a) Knives and other sharp edges.
b) Fires and other hot things.

Here are some simple safety tips to help keep your kitchen safe.

1. Puncture plastic pouches and plastic-wraps covering the food before heating. This will reduce the risk of a vapor pressure build up and prevent steam burns.

2. Eggs should be removed from the shell before being cooked in the microwave oven. The egg in a shell may explode causing both mechanical and thermal injuries.

3. Always make sure the oven and stovetop are clean. If not, clean them thoroughly. Grease and food residue can catch fire.

4. If a grease fire erupts in a pan kept on the stove, cover the pan with a lid or a larger pan quickly and carefully. Never use water. If the fire is in the oven, turn the controls off and close the door tightly. This will smother the flames.

5. Have fire extinguisher of appropriate size kept handy and see to it that it is refilled before it is expired.

6. Do not overload electrical circuits. Unplug appliances when not in use. If an appliance smells funny, doesn't function correctly, or has frayed or broken wiring, have it repaired or replaced. Whenever you smell a burning cable, switch off the mains and call the electrician.

7. All electrical points should have proper earthing and the main light switch of the kitchen should be always placed near the entrance.

8. Preventive maintenance of equipment is the best way to keep hazards away; follow the instruction manual and wherever required go for annual maintenance contracts.

9. If yours isn’t an auto-defrost or a frost-free refrigerator, defrost you refrigerator on a regular basis. As per the load in it, adjust the temperature inside. Keep heating appliances like oven at safe distance from the refrigerator.

10. Always wipe your hands dry before handling electrical appliances. Wearing of rubber slippers while using an electrical appliance is a must.
