Punjab Congress spokesperson Sukhpal Singh Khaira has appealed to the Sikhs across the globe to wear black turbans till Diwali as a mark of protest against the failure of state government to ensure justice in the case of sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib and also against killing of two protesters in police firing.

After visiting the bereaved families on Friday, Khaira said, "In order to convey our anguish on acts of sacrilege, all Sikhs should wear black turbans, black 'duppattas', black bands on arms and even put up black flags atop our houses till Diwali as a mark of protest."

He said, "Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal, through his cronies, is tinkering with the 'maryada' (tradition) of 'Panj Pyaras', initiated by our 10th master Guru Gobind Singh. Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee president Avtar Singh Makkar has committed a blunder by suspending the 'Panj Pyaras' merely to safeguard the job of jathedars of five Takhts. By doing so, Badal and Makkar have tried to challenge the authority of Guru Gobind Singh, for which the Sikhs will never pardon them."
