The Kaleera was made from pure fully-dried coconuts either as whole or half-cut coconut. In the course of the long and slow journey to the bride’s husband’s village the coconuts were nibbled on by the bride. The story behind this was to make sure the bride never became hungry.

Girls are supposed to symbolize Laxami/wealth/prosperity...and b/c the girl is leaving for the first time....it is just a way of preventing the girl from taking all the luck with her....as she kinda makes sure she does not leave the house all empty...and after her they don't struggle/suffer (don't go hungry etc....or business losses).
When she throws it over her head, she is just making sure the prosperity doesn;'t leave them.....
