The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday filed a supplementary chargesheet in the MCOCA court against underworld don Chotta Rajan for his involvement in the murder of veteran journalist Jyotirmoy Dey on June 11, 2011.
Rajan, whose real name is Rajendra Sadashiv Nikalje, ordered the hit on Dey for writing a book on the underworld that showed him poor light vis-a-vis India’s most wanted criminal, Dawood Ibrahim, according to the chargesheet filed before the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime (Act) court.
Dey, in the book, is said to have projected Rajan as ‘chindi’ or inconsequential and Dawood as the ‘don of Mumbai’. The chargesheet says that when Chotta Rajan got to know of this, he was so angry that he asked his men to kill Dey.
The CBI has named Rajan as the head of the syndicate behind Dey’s murder, and has said that he had provided financial support to carry out the murder.
Rajan, who was arrested in Indonesia, was deported to New Delhi in the first week of November 2015. The 54-year-old gangster is currently lodged at Mumbai’s Arthur Road jail.
CBI, in its supplementary chargesheet, has produced 41 fresh witnesses and 41 fresh documents, and has also incorporated a Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) report of a conversation between Rajan and another accused in Dey’s murder. The voice samples of Rajan, which were part of an interception, has matched states the FSL report, is said.
It has also named Ravi Ram Riteshwar as an accused. Riteshwar who allegedly supplied 20 global SIM cards to other accused, was earlier named as a witness after his confessional statement. He is now absconding.
The CBI’s supplementary chargesheet came on the last day of a 10-day extension the special court had granted it “one last chance” on July 25 to file a charges in the murder case.
While granting time to the CBI till August 5, special judge SS Adkar had said that if it failed to produce new evidence on record on, the court would proceed in framing of charges against the gangster.
The CBI had taken over the murder case in January this year from the Mumbai Police.
The case will also be tried on the basis of the chargesheet filed by the crime branch of the Mumbai Police where 10 people including Satiah Kaliya, Abhijeet Shinde, Arun Dake, Sachin Gaikwad, Anil Waghmode, Nilesh Shendge, Mangesh Agawane, Vinod Asrani, Paulson Joseph, Deepak Sisodia and Jigna Vora have been named as accused.
