Johnny Depp is close to signing a deal to star in a fifth Pirates of the Caribbean film after the latest instalment in the blockbuster series passed the $1 billion (Dh3.67 billion) mark at the global box office last week, reports the Wrap blog.

Studio Disney are said to be keen to secure Depp's services for another turn as Captain Jack Sparrow, and producer Jerry Bruckheimer has reportedly stated that there is no way for the franchise to continue without him. Some reports suggest Depp had an outlandishly profitable back-end deal which means he is likely to pocket close to $350 million for his swashbuckling escapades over the last four movies.

According to the Wrap, which quotes an inside source, a rough draft of the script for Pirates 5 is already in, and Bruckheimer is meeting three to four times a week with executives and screenwriters to improve it.
