Jaipur celebrates as teenage prince is crowned Maharaja

Jaipur: A 13-year-old prince is king now. Maharaj Kumar Padmanabh Singh, a student of the sixth standard, became the head of the Jaipur royalty following the death of Maharaja Brig Bhawani Singh of Jaipur.

On Wednesday, after the end of the 12-day mandatory mourning period, Padmanabh's coronation took place at the City Palace, making Padmanabh Singh the new His Highness The Maharaja of Jaipur.

In accordance with the tradition of the family, the coronation was held at the City Palace, with members of the erstwhile princely states, former nobles, landlords, businessmen, prominent citizens of Jaipur and well-wishers in attendance.

The solemn but elegant and graceful ceremony took place in the packed Darbar Hall of the palace.

The dress code specified was all white, including turbans of the same colour.

The young Maharaj Kumar, clad in white achkan and traditional safa, walked in a procession that started at the Chandra Mahal, headed for the Darbar Hall for the coronation.

Invited guests

The former royal families of Kashmir, Patiala, Jodhpur, Karauli, Dholpur, Alwar, Kishangarh, Jaisalmer, Sonpur, Santrampur, Sirohi, Loharu and Nahan were all in attendance.

Also were in attendance were A.A. Khan, Rajasthan's Health Minister; Dipendra Singh Shekhawat, Speaker of the Rajasthan Assembly; and Vinod Khanna, former film star and ex-Union minister.

Sachin Pilot, Union Minister of State for Telecommunications; Bina Kak, Rajasthan Tourism Minister; Vasundhara Raje, former chief minister, and Digvijay Singh, former chief minister of Madhya Pradesh also visited the palace on the big day.

The ceremony was performed by Rajpurohit Brijraj Kishan and Aachrya Dilip Sharma who chanted vedic mantras.

Blessing

The Rajpurohit put the tilak on the forehead of the young Maharaja. The priests and mahants of different religions (Hinduism, Sikhism, Islam, Christanity, Jainism) then blessed Maharaja Sawai Padmanabh Singh ji. The flag on the Chandra Mahal, which had been flying at half mast, was fully hoisted again. Drum beating at the Nakkarkhana resumed again.

After the Raj Tilak, the young Maharaja went to the courtyard and acknowledged the greetings of the public. He also inspected the Guard of Honour and entered the Zanana apartments to seek the blessings of the ladies of the royal family.
