Punjab is one of the few states where yoga is still not a recognised sport and students from the state get no benefit to opt for it.
“If our students take part in yoga, they will not get quota higher education. The state has no policy to cover yoga as a recognised sport,” says honorary secretary, Punjab Yoga Association, CK Mishra.
“We have been holding yoga sessions in the state for the past 40 years, but recently ‘gatka’, a Sikh traditional art form, was included as a sport, but not yoga,” he states. “In Haryana, the government has made recruitments to make sure yoga gets its due,” Mishra said.
SS Gill, president, Punjab Yoga Association, said they would soon send a request to the government to include yoga as a sport so that more students opt for it voluntarily. Punjab Sports Director Rahul Gupta said the process to include yoga as a sport would take about two months as the decision is to be taken by the Punjab cabinet.
