In a welcome move, the Indian Railways on Wednesday installed plastic bottle crushers at the Vodadara Railway station. The move which is aimed at minimising plastic waste will be implemented at other railway stations across the country

According to reports, every time a user enters his/her mobile number into the machine and inserts a plastic bottle in it, a cashback of Rs 5 will be credited to the individual's Paytm wallet. The plan has also been implemented by the Bengaluru division of the South Wester Railways (SRW). A report by the Times of India has asserted that plastic bottle crushers have been installed at KSR City, Yeshwantpur Cantonment and Krishnarajapuram stations. Railway stations in Ahmedabad, Pune, and Mumbai have also been equipped with plastic bottle crushers, said a representative of the SWR's Mysuru division.

Each machine costs an estimated Rs 4.5 lakh and has been designed in a manner that it will finely crush and release an inserted bottle as fine pieces of plastic rendering it more disposable. In addition, a cashback on one’s e-wallet is bound to encourage more and more people to use this service and will do a great deal in India’s plan to go plastic-free by 2022 as envisioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The initiative is a part of the Indian Railways' efforts to curb plastic pollution within its premises. On the occasion of World Environment Day, it had introduced the use of eco-friendly plastic plates to serve meals. IRCTC launched its environment-friendly bagasse-based food packaging on eight of its premium trains including Rajdhani and Shatabdi. In a tweet, Railways Minister Piyush Goyal had said, "A Small Step to Beat Plastic Pollution: On #WorldEnvironmentDay, Indian Railways has started using fully biodegradable packages in 4 Shatabdi and 4 Rajdhani trains from Delhi, contributing towards a greener planet (sic)."
