India pipped top seeded Russia in the tie-break to bag the silver medal in the World Youth Chess Olympiad which concluded at Burdur in Turkey last night.
A release from the All India Chess Federation here said India pipped Russia in the tie-break after both teams totalled 27.5 points and tied for the second and third places. Armenia won the title with 30.5 points. Twenty-two teams took part in the 10-round team competition.
India's 27.5 points came from (in board order) Vidit Gujrathi 6.5/9, Prasanna Rao 8/10, N Srinath 6/10, D Yashas 2.5/5, Utkal Ranjan Sahoo 4.5/6. India won seven matches, drew Russia and lost to Armenia and Turkey-1. India scored 3.5-0.5 against Turkmenistan in the final round after Russia managed only 3-1 against Syria.
Armenia, who had assured themselves of the title before the start of the final round, played a 2-2 draw against Turkey-1. Besides the team silver medals, Indians also figured in board prizes. Prasanna Rao of Mumbai was the best performer among all players on board two, while Vidit Gujrathi of Nasik was the second best performer in the top board. On the reserve board, Utkal Ranjan Sahoo of Orissa was the second best performer.
