An Indian Air force Drill Instructor Abhimanyu Gaud was run over and killed by an over speeding car in the morning of 13th January. The incident occurred at around 6:10 in the morning on Red Road during a Republic day rehearsal parade in Kolkata.

The young IAF official was hit by an Audi SUV with his body sustaining grievous injuries in head with multiple fractures. He was quickly taken to Eastern Command Hospital where he was declared dead.
The father of the 21 year old Air Force personnel is demanding an impartial probe and a severe punishment of the guilty in what seems to be a high profile Hit and run case.

His body was brought to his house at Godadhra area near Surat, Gujrat on the evening of 14th Jan and cremated after a guard of honour by the Indian Air Force

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) expressed dismay on this issue and pressurized Kolkata police to arrest the perpetrator. With modern technology and gadgets it won’t be a difficult task for the Police to track down the accused. After where the investigation is heading, the MoD is irreconcilable with the Police.

“The Audi came at a high speed, knocked down the Corporal and then sped away. It then swerved and smashed into a barricade. The driver got off and escaped before security personnel could reach the spot where the SUV collided with the barricade. The vehicle managed to breach three rings of security around Red Road. It could have been an explosive-laden vehicle. We have taken up the matter with the police who are in charge of security during the parade rehearsal,” a senior defence ministry official said.

The offender fled from the spot before the security could catch him and is still not apprehended.

It has been 2nd time in few days after Pathankot that the security of the defence personnel had been kept at stake. If it had been a terrorist attack, the results of it would have been catastrophic as a lot of security personnel would have lost their lives. The security agencies are considering it a major security breach.

After this tragic incident, what haunts the nation the most is, “If the heavily guarded military setups are not secure, how can an ordinary citizen be protected from the curse of these reckless drivers?”

The Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee assured that a stringent action will be taken against the offender but more than 72 hours have passed and there has been no apprehension of the accused.

After a pushing from the MoD, Kolkata Police have constituted a 22-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the case. The SIT will be headed by the Deputy Commissioner of Detective Department II, Nagendra Tripathi.
The vehicle was registered in the name of Mussadi Business Pvt Ltd of 16, Burman Street in north Kolkata which is owned by Ambia Sohrab, son of Md. Sohrab who happens to be the president of the Fruit Merchants’ Association in Kolkata. Md. Sohrab was also a Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MLA till 2011 and is now associated with the Trinamool Congress.

The investigators claim that even though the car was registered in the name of Ambia, his younger brother Sambia would have been driving the car.

A lookout notice including the photographs was issued by the police against Md. Sohrab and his sons, Ambia and Sambia is circulated in all the states. All of them went untraceable after the incident. There is a strict checking at all major airports and railway stations to track down the trio.

Ambia Shorab has also in the past been a menace for the city. He owns a fleet of expensive cars including the Hummer, Mercedes and Porche. Ambia was also detained for slapping a traffic police constable in 2006 but was released in a few hours.

The overall scenario has taken a slight political edge as West Bengal Youth Congress supporters started to protest against the Bengal police. While a section of supporters protested in the front of the police station, another section carried a candle light vigil near Park Street pressing for same demands and urging police to make immediate arrests.
Let’s hope that this time the victim’s family is not debarred from justice
