HUSBAND, IN-LAWS BOOKED FOR DEMANDING DOWRY OF RS 12 LAKH

Fatehgarh Sahib April 30:
The police have registered a case against the in-laws of Ramandeep Kaur of Pandrali village for allegedly demanding dowry of Rs 12 lakh.
The case has been registered against Ramandeep's husband Amarinder Singh, father-in-law Bhagwant Singh, mother-in-law Rajwant Kaur, brother-in-law Darshan Singh and sister-in-law Harkesh Kaur. Ramandeep was married to Amarinder on April 29, 2007 and her parents had given an Indica car, gold ornaments and other goods in marriage. Barely 15 days after the marriage, her in-laws started making more demands and harassing her for dowry.
She said that her in-laws told her family that their three relatives were settled abroad and they wanted Rs 15 lakh to settle their son in Italy to commence business in partnership. Ramandeep said that her parents had given Rs 3 lakh in the presence of the village panchayat but her husband left for Italy on September 6 last year without informing her. One day, he contacted her from Italy and told her that he would move for bringing her to Italy only if her parents agreed to pay him the remaining amount of Rs 12 lakh. She said that she remained in touch with her husband over the phone without informing her family.
Finally, her husband demanded money to return to India and Ramandeep approached her uncle for help. He sent Rs 70,000 and her husband returned on January 13, 2008. Her in-laws again started harassing her. The village panchayat tried to amicably settle the matter two-three times but the harassment continued, culminating in the filing of the case by her parents.
