Dubai: The first edition of the Arab Women's Sports Championship will be held in Sharjah under the patronage and supervision of Shaikha Jawaher Bint Mohammad Al Qasimi, Wife of His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Member of Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah.

This was announced at the end of the meeting of the organising committee of the Sharjah Ladies Club (SLC), who confirmed that the first edition of the competition will be known as "1st Arab Women's Sports Championships, Sharjah" and will be held in February next year. "This is the first of its kind anywhere in the Arab world and competition will be open to all women from various clubs in the Arab world," noted Nada Al Naqbi, Manager, Tournament Executive Committee and Manager, Women's Sports Department at SLC.

The Arab Women's Sports Championship is a venture that comes in line with the GCC Championship that has been held every two years by the SLC since 1998.

The idea of hosting an all-women's competition was hosted by the SLC at the conclusion of the recent championships held for UAE clubs during Ramadan. And after Shaikha Jawaher gave her assent to the proposal, the organising committee held talks with the General Authority of Youth and Sports Welfare. "Such a competition is bound to contribute in increasing the status of women sports and raise the convergence between countries in the sports field," Al Naqbi added.

Meanwhile, the first meeting of the higher organizing committee was attended by Noura Al No'man, Director General of Shaikha Jawaher's Executive Office along with Khawla Al Serkal, Member, Higher Organising Committee and Al Naqbi.

Al Naqbi also expressed her hope in achieving good results in the first edition of this tournament.
