Planning out your holidays round the world, but apprehensive whether or not you will enjoy your flight? Many people suffer from airsickness or flight takeoff sickness, which keeps them off from going out on a tour, even when they wish to do so. Did you know that a prolonged fear of planes can lead to anxiety, which can, in turn, take the shape of a phobia? Airsickness is more prevalent for a person, at the time when plane takes off or is due for landing. This is caused due to a number of factors, some of them being because of the steep position of the plane, the sudden increase and decrease of the speed and the rushing past land. These not-so-pleasing views send signals to the brain, causing nausea and dizziness in the person. This feeling of nausea can make the journey difficult for the person and can even prohibit him/her from boarding any flight ever again. This article provides you with ways on how to overcome airsickness.

How To Overcome Airsickness

  • One of the primary causes of air sickness can be stress or fear. An already disturbed mind will find it difficult to interpret the conflicting signals from eyes and ears at the time of a takeoff. Therefore, before you board the plane, relax your nerves and don’t get stressed thinking about your flight.
  • Avoid traveling with an empty or an overly full stomach. Eating a large meal just before you are due to fly will increase the risk of airsickness. Similarly, an empty stomach can also cause problems. It is safe to have a light meal before boarding your flight and it is even better if there is little time gap between your meal and the flight. Eating crackers, fresh fruits and olives will avoid airsickness attacks.
  • Even when the plane has taken off and the seat-belt signs are off, try and remain seated. Staying on your seat for some time will help balance your body. If your balance is impaired, any sudden motion of the aircraft will make you feel sick. It is advisable for you to close your eyes and rest behind on the headrest for a while, after the plane is off the runway. This will stabilize your head and will block the messages sent by the eyes and ears to the brain.
  • Ginger biscuits or mint sweets also prove to be effective in getting rid of the nausea and the airsickness. Sweets will also help avoid ear problems associated with flying.
  • Psychology of a person can also play an important role in avoiding or aggravating the condition of airsickness. Try not to think about your flight and your nausea just before boarding the plane. Once on board, try and get a small nap or concentrate on a book or a magazine to divert your attention.
  • The best would be to grab a seat beside the wings of the plane. There is less movement around the wing of the plane, which makes the seats beside it stable. So, for those who are scared of the flights, try and book the seats near the wings of the craft. In case the seats have already been reserved, request the staff once you are on board to shift you near the wings.
  • Another way to divert your mind and stop the signals from reaching your brain once you are on board is to use a portable music system. Carry your favorite music along and plug it in once you are on the plane to get rid of your nausea.
  • You can even take few anti-airsickness tablets after consulting your physician. You can even use the special wristbands supplied at the airports that have a beneficial against your motion sickness.
