History
The Grewal community are the descendants of the Chandel Rajputs of Bilaspur in Himachal Pradesh in North India.
They share their family tree with Chandel Rajputs. Chandels are one of the 36 royal castes of Rajputs. At one time, Chandels ruled over Bundelkhand. This state fell in the middle of rivers Yamuna and Narmada. They had their fort at Kalinjar.
They came into Punjab in around 1469 AD. The main villages of the Grewals are Phallewall, gujjarwall, Lalton Kalan,Kila Raipur,Mehma Singh Wala,Sarabha, Daad, Thakkerwal, Andlu among a lot others; there are another 70 smaller villages around these three, all in the district of Ludhiana. Guru Hargobind visited Gujjarwal in 1631 AD. Grewals converted to Sikhism at this time. Grewals also contributed a lot in the freedom fight of INDIA. Kartar Singh Sarabha from Sarabha village lead the fight and was accepted as guru by great freedom fighter Bhagat Singh.
It is said that one of the Chandel Rajput kings, named Bairsi had a son named Grewal from a Jat woman, from where the name started.[who?]
Located south of the Sutlej River, the Grewals came under British rule early even as Maharaja Ranjit Singh consolidated the Sikh Empire all the way to Kabul. The Grewal villages with a rural middle class prospered and established schools which led to further progress. Education became the passport for the Grewals to travel and obtain positions across the Punjab and also relieve pressure on the small land holdings. They also joined the British Indian army and fought in wars from Mesopotamia to Germany.

Cheema –One of the largest Jatt tribes in the Punjab. They say that some 25 generations back their ancestor Cheema, a Kazakh from Siberia after the defeat of Rai Tanura (Prithi Raj, by Muhammad of Ghor first to gj in the Delhi district and then to Amritsar, where his son Chotu Mal founded a village on the Bias in the time of Ala-ud-din. His grandson was called Rana Kang , and the youngest of his eight sons Dhol (the name appears among the Hingra )was the ancestor of the present clans Dogal, Mohtil, Nagara and Chima. The Chima have the peculiar marriage customs described under the Sahi Jats, and they are said to be served by Jogis instead of Brahmins, but now a days Bhania purohits are said to perform their ceremonies. They are said to marry within the tribe as well as with their neighbours. The bulk of the tribe embraced Islam in the times of Feroze Shah and Aurangzeb, but many retain their old customs. They are most numerous in Sialkot, but hold 42 villages in Gujaranwala ,as well as in some villages of Gujrat-Pakistan(Kala Chak) and have spread both eastwards and westwards along the foot of the hills.
It is noteworthy that the tribe takes its generic name from its youngest clan, and is descended from Dhol, a youngest son.
