The Maharashtra government yesterday said it has tightened security for RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat after a fresh threat to his life from a Hindu militant group came to light.

Members of Abhinav Bharat, a Hindu militant group, named after a similar organisation founded by Vinayak Savarkar, allegedly plotted to kill Bhagwat at a function in Pune. Information on the threat to Bhagwat's life was provided to the Bombay High Court by Samir Kulkarni, who is a co-accused in the 2008 Malegaon blasts case.

Counsel for the anti-terror squad of the Mumbai police Rohini Salian told the court yesterday that the security has been tightened for Bhagwat. The government may also file a fresh FIR and order fresh investigations if required, Salian told the court.
