HEALTH DEPT BRINGS CHEER TO NEEDY ON I-DAY

Chandigarh August 16:
For top officials of the Health Department, it was a break from sitting in swanky offices and clearing files. This Independence Day, the department added a cause to its celebrations by celebrating the day with patients in district hospitals.
Top government officials, from Principal Secretary (Health) Vijay Kain, Director (Health Services) Dr S.P.S. Sohal, Punjab Health Systems Corporation MD T.R. Sarangal, NHRM Mission Director Satish Chandra, Ayush Commissioner K.B.S. Sidhu and ESI Director Dr Y.C. Markan were touring parts of the state for the last three days, inspecting health centres and holding medical camps in slum areas and for school students.
The plan for officials to move out in field areas was triggered on the directions of Health Minister Laxmi Kanta Chawla. Officials say the Minister was of the opinion that the occasion could be celebrated in a befitting manner by associating with patients and those in need. Officials hoisted the flag in district hospitals and distributed fruits and sweets among patients.
Satish Chandra said officials were allocated two or more than two districts to cover in the last three days. On the first day, as many as 13 medical camps were organised in slum areas. On Day Two, medical camps were organised for students. An estimated 1.10 lakh students were diagnosed during the camp. At Ferozepur alone, as many as 14,600 students were examined on a single day.
T.R. Sarangal, who celebrated the day with patients at Gurdaspur Hospital today, said, "Our officials were out in districts. We were able to provide health care at the doorstep of people.”
