GUCCI will open its fifth store in India in Gurgaon at The Oberoi hotel later this month. To celebrate the store’s opening, archival pieces from the brand’s classic “Flora World” collection comprising ready-to-wear accessories, scarves, sketches and porcelain items will travel to India for the first time. This unique collection will be exhibited at the store, starting November 24, for a month. “Flora” is one of Gucci’s most defining classics and its origin dates back to 1966, when Princess Grace of Monaco visited Gucci’s Via Monte Napoleone store hoping to see owner Rodolfo Gucci’s wife Alessandra, who, like her, was an actor. When Rodolfo pressed her to take a gift, she requested for a scarf with flowers. Not having anything to offer his guest, Rodolfo went on to ask his friend and artist Vittorio Accornero to produce a floral scarf. The result was a notable design, featuring 43 varieties of flowers and plants and nine kinds of insects, which was christened “Flora”. The label’s creative director Frida Giannini revived “Flora” as a print on a collection for handbags in 2005 and then in print dresses in Spring 2006, along with floral jewellery and watches. “Flora” was then re-incarnated as a women’s fragrance in 2009 and the “Flora Garden” collection in 2011. The label’s latest “Cruise 2013” collection, which will be available at Gucci in Gurgaon, sees the application of the “Flora” pattern throughout the womenswear line. The luxury brand will also introduce its exclusive “Made to Measure” services for its male customers for the first time in India at this store.
