Google’s first foray into laptop hardware is proving a big hit with developers. Although the Cr-48 was just intended to run an early version of Chrome OS, it hasn’t stopped hackers putting other operating systems on the machine.
So far we’ve seen Windows 7, Mac OS X, and Ubuntu loaded on to the hardware. But today we found out Android also works.
Liam McLoughin, otherwise known as Hexxeh, is a very active developer who was lucky enough to receive a Cr-48. He posted a picture via his Twitter account showing the laptop running a version of Android. We don’t know specifically which version, but would like to think it’s the latest.
Hexxeh has also been developing an “any OS” installer for the Cr-48 called Luigi. So far it handles Windows 7, OS X, and Ubuntu, but now he’s got Android running it will probably become part of Luigi too. Luigi is desirable as it offers a very simple way of flashing the Cr-48 firmware, which is otherwise quite an involved task depending on the OS you want to load.
Although Hexxeh hasn’t officially released the files allowing for an Android install on the Cr-48, Twitter use coggy9 found them and got Android running on his own Cr-48 proving it really does work.
