Goal riot in Cape Town! Portugal crush N Korea 7-0

Cape Town: Goals rained along with the water in Cape Town as an absolute cracker of a performance by Portugal saw them winning by a huge 7-0 score against a shocked and shattered North Korea.

Continuing with the goal scoring like a well-oiled machine, the Portuguese players were on target as Cristiano Ronaldo finally hit his opening goal in the 87th minute. This was shortly followed up by Tiago’s second goal of the night in the 89th minute, Portugal’s seventh of the evening, the best score by a team in the FIFA World Cup 2010.

Making a mockery of the North Korean defence, Liedson slammed one into the nets in the 80th minute, soon after he came in as a substitute for his fellow scorer Hugo Almeida.

Tiago was the goal scorer the fourth time as Ronaldo powered down the left flank, cut into the box and pulled it back to the middle for Tiago, who sidefooted a knife-through-butter shot into the bottom corner.

Portugal were on cruise control as the North Korean defence, so astute and solid against Brazil, looked weary and just a tad off the pace in this game.

It was a triple delight for Portugal as the third goal was fired-in past the goalkeeper in less then two minutes from the second one, the man for the treble was Hugo Almeida.

Simao was the second man to score against the hapless North Korean outfit. His 56th minute effort marked what may be the end of the Asian minnows in the World Cup.

Raul Meireles had made his presence felt in the 29th minute with a superb goal as he latched on to a gorgeous through ball by Tiago and finished clinically past Myong-Guk.

The crucial game in Group G between Portugal and North Korea started amongst much fanfare, buzzing with the jam packed stadium. Portugal coach Carlos Queiroz started with Eduardo in goal, Miguel, Carvalho, Alves, Coentrao in defence, Mendes, Meireles and Tiago in midfield, with Ronaldo, Almeida and Simao leading the frontline.

North Korea coach Kim Jong Hun, on the other hand, lined up with a very tight, very compact 5-3-1-1 formation. Jong Tae Se will lead the attack with Yong-Jo behind him; In-Guk, Nam Choi, Yong Hak in midfield, with Jun-Il, Kwang-Chon, Chol JIn, Yun Nam and Jyong Hyok in defence.
