The decision of Guru Nanak Dev University to start online admission to the two-year masters in journalism and mass communication course has left scores of students pursuing bachelors degree in journalism in the lurch. The university has introduced online admissions in this academic session. Under online admissions, only those candidates who have secured 50 per cent marks in graduation or postgraduation in any stream can apply for the course. Final-year students pursuing bachelors degree in journalism cannot appear for online admissions as they are yet to appear for two viva voce.

Even the date for the viva voce has not been finalised by the university. However, university sources said viva voce of dissertation would be held on June 21 while the date of the second viva has not been declared.

“I was keen on pursuing a masters degree in journalism and mass communication but the GND varsity Regional Centre, Ladhewali, told us that I am ineligible. For the online admissions a student should have passed graduation. But since our viva voce is still to be held, we are helpless,” said a student.

Another student said, “Though the university claims that it would conduct both viva voce soon but it would easily take a month for them to declare the results. And we would not be able to appear for the online admissions for this course.”

University Registrar Dr Inderjeet Singh said he would direct Dr K.S. Duggal, head of the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, Regional Campus, Ladhewali, to inform students that those appearing for the final-year examination can also apply for the online admissions. Counselling would be held only when the results of these students were declared, he said.

Guru Nanak Dev University is the first university in the region to start online admissions. The online process has been introduced from this academic year for 30 seats in the course. Earlier the university had been conducting an entrance test for this course.
