The police on Monday arrested the husband of a 35-year-old woman who was shot inside her second-floor flat at DLF Ankur Vihar colony in Loni on the night of December 19. The accused allegedly told the police that he was angry at his wife for joining aerobics classes nearby.
According to the police, the accused Vikram Singh Tomar had an argument over the matter with his wife Ritu on December 19. Their two minor children were watching television in another room at the time. During the argument, Tomar took out a .32 calibre weapon and shot his wife, police said.
“He shot her in the head from close range. The two children were in the other room and could not hear the gunshot as the pistol had a silencer. Later, Tomar left with them for his native place after bolting the flat’s door from outside,” said AP Singh, station house officer at Loni police station. Tomar, who deals in cello tapes in Delhi and Ghaziabad, hails from Etawah in UP.
The next day, when no one answered the door, neighbours entered and found the woman lying dead in a pool of blood. They then informed the police. Tomar too is said to have returned to Ghaziabad after leaving his children with his parents.
“The woman’s family members were called up and an FIR was lodged on the night of December 20. The accused was arrested after he returned. During questioning, he said that he was upset with his wife going to the aerobics class. He also didn’t approve of a woman from the neighbourhood whose company she kept and who went to the classes with her,” Singh said.
“Tomar said that during the argument he asked his wife to stop attending the classes and keep away from the woman. According to him, she did not listen to him and said that if he had the freedom to do what he wanted, so did she,” Singh added.
Following the arrest, the police also recovered the weapon allegedly used in the crime. The accused was booked for murder and under the provisions of the Arms Act at Loni police station.
“The weapon was illegal and we also recovered a silencer. We are trying to find out where it was procured from,” Singh said.
The victim’s family said that the couple had got married almost 10 years ago.
“Vikram drank often and was of a suspicious nature. He restricted her movements and used to beat her up during arguments. We had forwarded a complaint to the women’s cell in Delhi after one such incident,” said Tarun Singh, the victim’s elder brother who hails from Bhajanpura in Delhi.
