Full Review of Sony Xperia M : Advantages and Disadvantages of buying it

Sony Xperia series is quite long but every phone has got the prominent space. If we take a look on this series from low range to the high, then it will be easily recognizable that everyone has got its respective popularity and fame and today I will take up one member of this family which is one of the mid ranging device; β€œSony Xperia M”.

Xperia M has the 4β€³ FWVGA display of 245ppi, a dual-core Krait processor, and 720p video capturing with its 5MP camera along with the LED Flash.

BUILT AND DESIGN

Sony Xperia M has tough built and great design similar to that of Xperia Z, maybe M is real aspirant of Z in the case of design. The Sony Xperia M measures 124 x 62 x 9.3 mm and weighs 115g. While the bezel runs at down and at the crest of the M. The handset look quite classy and strictly follows the design guidelines of the Xperia family. It has the trademarked round, metal power key which I think is the coolest part of Xperia’ built.

The engineering of the Sony Xperia M seems quite impressive than any other phone of the same range. I am sure that you did like the phone while holding it in your hand. It is of the perfect size and which fits comfortably into one’s pocket. The position of the ports and keys have been made reliable.

Since there is no special treatment given to the placement of the ports and all but all of them are in there perfect place. The earpiece is above the screen and to the left of it is the VGA front-facing camera, along with the proximity and ambient light sensors. RGB Notification has been given to the device just below the screen which gives different light indication which meant different events, and can be changed from settings according to your need. You will not find any of the Physical key like Samsung nor any of the capacitive keys in the front panel, here you get is plane panel while the keys are shifted to the UI and the mic is here shifted into the front panel which is somewhat absurd when you accidentally place your hand above the mic.

All of the keys are present on the right side, while the Power/ Standby key is big and the truly represents the brand Sony. Volume rockers and the Shutter key are placed below the Power key and are easy to press. Micro USB and 3.5mm Audio jack are placed up side. M’s port supports MHL so you can use it as a TV-out with an appropriate adapter to HDMI.

Looking at the back panel you get the 5MP camera along with the flash to the left while the Sony and Xperia are printed on the panel separately and the Xperia mark is at the middle of the matte panel. Xperia M comes in Black, White, Purple and Yellow colors. So, over-all the looks of this device gets maximum.

DISPLAY

The Sony Xperia M has a 4β€³ LCD display of FWVGA resolution (480 x 854) and the 245ppi pixel density. It’s protected by a scratch-resistant glass and is also finger print resistant.

Xperia M doesn’t gets very great display but is just mediocre. The thing that we encountered was the loose of the white balance in the display, which tends toward the negative or cold side giving you a bluish admixture. The viewing angles are not impressive at all, with a visible loss of contrast and lacks in sharp color effects if you look it assiduously.

Ambient Light sensors works quite well even under day light, giving you brightness enough to access phone easily. While with the display Sony has attached some of features like Backlit, Gesture Input and Handwriting Recognition while M can support 4 Points Multi-touch and Touch Panel Cover Glass also seemed nice.

CAMERA

Xperia M offers you a 5MP rear camera with the support of the LED Flash for the low light conditions. Sony’s 5 MP rear camera is scrubby which reproduce still shots of maximum resolution of 2592 x 1944 pixels. Photos took from M’s camera is fine under daylight, and average in indoors. You can clearly see the over saturation in the still shots, moreover its camera quality is lower than that of Xperia L.

M has lots of miscellaneous features and option which may seems good. With the Auto Focus, Geo-tagging, Touch Focus, Image Stabilization, HDR, Sweep Panorama, Exmor RS, Face Detection, Red-eye Reduction, Quick Launch, Self-timer, Send to Web, Smile Shutter, Touch Capture and Fast Capture it repacks its camera.

While High Dynamic Range (HDR) creates a little effect. But it improves the underexposed color which appears in normal shot. Sony Xperia M gives 720p video recording at 30 fps. Since we didn’t saw any disturbance in the bitrate of the video but it doesn’t gives good video recording as it lacks of brightness and doesn’t have HDR for video either.

You can take photos while recording the video but the still shots you get is of VGA Quality. At low lights or indoor it is not possible to get good video and continuous Auto Focus makes the video ruined. The UI of the camera is good, where you get the still shot capturing and video recording side by side so you need not to change the mode for doing so and a pair off icons of front camera and gallery with the little thumbnail through which you can see the most recently taken videos or photo and tapping it leads you to the gallery.

At the top you have the three icon shortcuts. Settings can be managed easily by tapping the settings icon placed at the top of the panel. All of the settings are well managed and easy to find.

HARDWARE AND CONNECTIVITY

M has the 1 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4, Dual Core processor which does almost every job excellently with small span of time and with the 1 GB RAM it comes to its maximum potential. Xperia M ensures you to give excellent speed in every tasks and you don’t need to think about tuning your phone for better performance every week. The Adreno 305 is the GPU chip allowed with the S4 processor is meant for running high end games like NFS Most Wanted and GTA Vice City. 4 GB of internal memory is available for storing apps and files within the device and you can also expand the memory by installing microSD Card up to of 32 GB.

Xperia M have all of the necessary connectivity measures. Xperia M are available in two kinds i.e. Single SIM and Dual SIM. Net Surfing is great on this device even in the 2G network. Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Hotspot, micro USB v2, A-GPS with Google Maps, Bluetooth v4 and DLNA are the couple of the features contained in Xperia M.

UI AND SOFTWARE

The Xperia M runs on Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean along with the Sony’s customization. Homescreen of M have five panel while can be maximum reach to seven in numbers. You can make add or remove any of the screen the according to your need or you can make any of them as Homescreen but can’t alter the order of the screen.

Sony has given some of its basic widgets which is available in all the Xperias. You can add any of the widgets just by holding and dropping it from your app drawer to Homescreen or using pinch to zoom out gesture. Doing so will lead you to the context menu featuring you different options.

JELLY BEAN WITH XPERIA SKIN

Running even on the Jelly bean widgets here cannot be resized or rearranged. You can choose static or live Wallpapers depending on your choice. Can also see the previews before setting any of the live wallpaper.

Selecting a new theme changes the lock and home screen wallpapers and the color of the system. The LED strip below the screen will light up with the same color you have chosen as your theme. The LED strip also notify various events and you can customize the colors that are used for different conditions. You can select one of seven colors for Unread SMS, Missed call, Incoming SMS and for Alarms. Since all most of the UI is stock one but browsing through UI was quite impressive and fluid smooth.

WRAP-UP

Choosing Sony Xperia M among the mid ranging phone is good idea. If we take a look upon all of the mid ranging phones Xperia M offers the attractive design, compact size and good build, and a reasonably powerful chipset for the given class. 1 GB of RAM makes the phone runs smoothly and you may also run latest games without any lag. Still you have other options like HTC 8S, LG Optimus L7 II, Samsung Galaxy Ace 3 if you don’t choose Xperia M as your new Smartphone.
