Hon Hai Precision Industry Co Ltd, or Foxconn, as its trading name goes, has said that it will launch a host of products running Firefox OS, including smartphones, tablets, TVs, electronic whiteboards and outdoor displays, Reuters reports.

The company reportedly, has also revealed that over five devices are already in development. The announcement was made at a press conference during Computex 2013, where Young Liu, general manager of the Foxconn Innovation Digital System Business Group was quoted as saying, "The (major) operating systems in the market now are not doing good enough...the Mozilla solution will complement what other operating systems lack, such as Android in native mode. There is currently no solution based on HTML5 and open Web technologies."

Whole bunch of devices running Firefox OS to be launched

At the event in Taipei, Foxconn Technology Group announced its partnership with Mozilla. Following the announcement, the companies will come together on the use of the Firefox OS open platform, based on HTML5 and open web technologies, on Foxconn devices. Dr. Li Gong, SVP of Mobile Devices, President of Asia Operations, and CEO of Mozilla Taiwan said, “We are very excited about the cooperation with Foxconn and we are glad to see more partners supporting the Firefox OS and the open Web.”

He added, “At Mozilla we see the open Web as the biggest and the best platform for the mobile world. The Firefox OS initiative helps solidify open Web standards for mobile computing; it also encourages and enables more openness in system integration and device interoperation. This cooperation demonstrates the full potential of Firefox OS, the open Web mobile operating system, to enable not only the smartphone but also a wide range of mobile devices."

Incidentally, while the company did announce their collaboration at the event, they did not display any devices. For those not in the know, last month it had been reported that there were chances that both, Mozilla and Foxconn would unveil a product running the Firefox OS during their June 3 event. The companies were to also formally announce their partnership at the event, after which Foxconn would become the 19th company to partner with Mozilla.

At the conference, Liu added that Foxconn is investing in a new unit in Kaohsiung in southern Taiwan, complete with a planned workforce of 500 - 1,000 employees to work with Mozilla on developing hardware, software, content and services. He even stressed on the fact that Hon Hai will not start its own brand, and instead offer solutions to its popular clients.

As per details known at the moment, Mozilla had in the past said that it is working with five manufacturers - Alcatel, TCL Communication Technology, LG Electronics, ZTE Corp and Huawei Technologies to build the first devices running the Firefox OS.
