FIVE DIE IN ROAD ACCIDENTS

Within a fortnight of a traffic department survey revealing that the rate of accidents this year was thankfully lesser than 2007, the city witnessed five deaths in separate incidents in the last 24 hours.
In the wee hours of a youth, around 27 years old, was knocked down by an unidentified vehicle near the road separating sectors 9 and 17. While the body remained unidentified till the filing of this report, SHO of Sector 3 police station Har Sahai Sharma said, “A visiting card of a Himachal Pradesh resident was recovered on the deceased and we called to inform the person.”Another death on the road was reported during the day from Sector 21 when 20-year-old domestic help Ramdin was hit by a bus (CH-03Q-4637) of St Kabir School, Sector 26.
While Ramdin was on his cycle, the bus was reportedly plying on ‘C’ road despite school vehicles being banned by UT police from entering internal roads of sectors. Stating that driver Surjeet Singh of Mohali had been arrested, investigating officer ASI Acchar Singh from Sector 19 police station said, “Ramdin was crossing the road when he was hit by a St Kabir School bus that had just dropped a student.”
The third casualty took place on Wednesday night when private architect Jagtar Singh was declared brought dead in PGI. Jagtar along with Pradeep Kumar and Gurbaj Singh were on a motorcycle when it was rammed by a Tata Sumo (CH-02C-1801) near Hotel Aroma in Sector 22. According to information, the trio was on their way to their PG accommodation Sector 21 at the time of incident. “The accident was so powerful that the bike was dragged for more than 25m by the rogue vehicle,” said the police.
Both Jagtar and Pardeep, now undergoing treatment in a private hospital for serious injuries, belonged to Faridkot district, while Gurbaj hailed from Ferozepur in Punjab. Even as the police managed to seize the four-wheeler, the accused driver escaped from the spot. Meanwhile, in another incident one more person died while three others sustained serious injuries in a road accident on Ramgarh road, which took place on Thursday evening.
Police said, the incident took place when Yadvinder, Sandeep and Jaswant, all residents of Mankya village in Barwala, were going back to their place from Ramgarh in their car, which collided with a mini truck. While Yadvinder, 27, died on the spot, Sandeep and Jaswant received serious injuries. Ram Kumar, who was driving mini truck, was also injured. All the injured were rushed to PGI. According to police, since it was raining when the accident took place.
Another road mishap was reported on National Highway-73 in which 30-year-old man died in an accident near Golpura village on Raipurrani in Panchkula district. According to police, on late Wednesday night, an unknown vehicle hit Suvrim Chaudhary while he was crossing the road to go to village Golpura. Hailing from Uttar Pradesh, the deceased had gone to meet his nephew in Golpura village. After the postmortem, police handed over the body to his relatives for cremation.
