FISH PERISH IN SUTLEJ AT NANGAL DUE TO WATER POLLUTION
Nangal November 19:

In yet another incident of fish mortality, a large number of fish have perished in the Sutlej river at Nangal due to high levels of toxicity in the waters.

The dead fish floating on the waters in the river were noticed by the people near village Bela Dhiani, downstream Bhakra Nangal dam this morning. A large quantity of dead fish have already been carried away in the water of the river downstream, district official when contacted today confirmed.

Many of the villagers even took away the dead fish to their homes for consumption, officials stated. It may be mentioned that some chemical industries including National Fertilizers Limited (NFL) and Punjab Alkalis and Chemicals Limited PACL are situated in the area and it is alleged that the fish might have died due to release of some toxic effluents from the two units.

NFL authorities, however, denied that the fish might have died due to release of effluents from their plant and claimed that all the parameters of effluent treatment system are normal and no toxic effluent had been released into the Sutlej. This is the fourth incident of fish mortality in the Sutlej at Nangal during the last few years. The incident has brought forth the need for urgent corrective measures to prevent reoccurrence of such incidents.
