In a bid to improve the ads it shows users, Facebook has announced that it will circumvent ad blockers on the desktop website. However, the social network is giving users the control to block ads from certain businesses, as well as ads.

Facebook says it is giving users the ability to block ads as it has learnt people don’t like to see ads that are irrelevant to them or that disrupt or break their experience. With the introduction of new tools, you can stop seeing certain types of ads. If you don’t want to see ads about a certain interest like travel or cats, you can change the settings by tapping on ‘manage your ad preferences.’ You will see a list of interests that Facebook has selected for you based on that info it has that can be removed in case you don’t want to see such ads.

Moving on, the social network has also improved how it decides which ads to show, and it has created new ad formats “that complement, rather than detract from, people’s experience online.”

Facebook’s Andrew Bosworth, VP, Ads & Business Platform said in a blog post,

We’ve designed our ad formats, ad performance and controls to address the underlying reasons people have turned to ad blocking software. When we asked people about why they used ad blocking software, the primary reason we heard was to stop annoying, disruptive ads. As we offer people more powerful controls, we’ll also begin showing ads on Facebook desktop for people who currently use ad blocking software.
